Friends of the Elephant Seals docent, Christel Chesney worked the Piedras Blancas bluffs yesterday, and posted this report on her Facebook Page: “When I reported for duty today I was told to be on the lookout for a young (150 pound) elephant seal with “something red” hanging from his mouth. I was there for about 30 minutes when this little e-seal swam to shore. It had a very large hook, and red lure with the line still attached in its mouth.Three gals from Marin County rescue climbed down from the bluffs for the rescue. Unfortunately, the seal was faster than Lisa and swam out into the ocean. When the gulls saw the fishing lure in the e-seal’s mouth, they started attacking the e-seal. Hopefully he will show up tomorrow on the beach and another rescue will be tried. He is starving to death because he cannot eat.”
