Every year, over 8 million tons of plastic is being deliberately dumped into the ocean, causing catastrophic consequences for marine life and their habitats
Plastics in Ocean
Plastic Fills Stomachs of 13 Beached Whales
A post-mortem of the creatures, found ashore near the town of Toenning in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, showed their stomachs were full of plastic.
This plastic included a 13-metre-long (43-foot-long) fisherman’s net and a 70-centimetre (28-inch) piece of plastic from a car.
Plastic Removal Inventions
Editor’s Note: Neptune 911 will post, on occasion (when the source seems valid), various idea, inventions, or methods to remove plastic from our seas. Neptune 911 does not endorse these ideas, but brings them to your attention for your own… Read More ›
Microplastic Impact on Oysters
The researchers then observed the oysters’ physiological responses to ingesting the microplastics. The most obvious effect was on reproduction. Oysters that were exposed to microplastics produced fewer and smaller egg cells and slower sperm. Exposed oysters also produced fewer larvae and their offspring tended to grow more slowly.
Circular Economy for Plastics Proposed
–From Fortune By 2050, the ocean is expected to contain more plastic than fish by weight. The steady leakage of plastic packaging into the oceans—at the rate of one garbage truck full of plastic per minute—has been aided by the… Read More ›
More Floating Microplastics in Ocean than Expected
But ocean plastics pose a threat to a wide variety of marine animals, and their risk is determined by the amount of debris an animal encounters, as well as the size and shape of the debris.
Biologist Equates Plastics in Environment to DDT Contamination
–Visit Neptune 911 For Kids to learn more about Patricia Newman’s “Plastic, Ahoy!” A prominent Canadian marine biologist has warned of a second “silent spring” — this time in the world’s oceans — due to the vast amount of plastic… Read More ›
Ocean Star Surrounded by “Endless layers of garbage”
Far away from California’s coast, where the Pacific Ocean currents swirl, the blue of the sea was replaced by fishing nets, buckets, buoys, laundry baskets and unidentifiable pieces of plastic that floated past the Ocean Star, a ship carrying a… Read More ›
Video Shows Plankton Consuming Plastic Beads
Neptune 911 has reported on scientific concerns about plastics in the seafood that we consume. This video shows how plankton easily consume plastic beads. Yes, the following is editorializing, something Neptune 911 uses only when facts out-weigh the hyperbole. There… Read More ›
G-7 Summit to Urge Plastic Clean-Up
Plastic waste causes $13 billion in damage to marine ecosystems each year, according to the UN Environment Program. California and cities including Chicago, Seattle and Portland have banned single-use plastic bags.
